IRON (Fe) and MANGANESE (Mn):
Next to hardness and acidity, the presence of Iron and manganese in your water is probably the most common problem faced by consumers in the south west.
Iron is often found to be in your water because of the large amount of Iron present in the ground. Over time, iron deposits can build up within your water heater, pressure tanks and pipelines etc. which may reduce the pressure and flow of your water supply.
Manganese is a metallic element which can resemble an oily film (in severe cases) on the surface. Sometimes where iron and manganese is present, it can stain your laundry and white porcelain. The water may also have a metallic taste.
ULTRA VIOLET FILTER
It is recommended that all boreholes are fitted with Ultra Violet Filtration to kill any bacteria present in the supply. Although bacteria may not be present at the time of testing, this could alter due to, for exapmle, a change in weather conditions or ground contamination.
The ultra violet unit is fitted with a 5-Micron sediment filter, to protect the quartz sleeve inside the UV. The UV bulb should be replaced annually and the sediment filter as required depending on the quality of the water or when the water pressure becomes low.
PH CORRECTION UNIT
This is a cylinder; approximately 4 ft tall, it is filled with a calcium carbonate based media to neutralise the acid water. Where water is dirty or metals are present in the supply this unit can be fitted with a back-washing head to provide a self-cleaning filter.
FILOX IRON & MANGANESE FILTER
Filox-R™ is a specially prepared medium for the reduction of Iron, Hydrogen Sulphide and Manganese. We have found that it out performs the other filter medias that are most commonly used for the treatment of these contaminants. According to the manufacturers specification the media can last up to 20 years.
Filox works on the principle of a catalyst reaction, but itself remains relatively unchanged. This reaction is accompanied with the formation of intermediate compound or compounds, such as higher oxides of manganese. By alternate composition and decomposition of these oxides, the Filox is left unchanged. Filox works on a principle whereby the hydrogen sulfide, iron, and manganese are oxidized and simple back washing cleans the bed.
Filox is very dense and heavy and stops the oxidized form of iron, manganese, and hydrogen sulfide from proceeding any further through the media (anything greater than 20 microns). Since the Filox media is so dense and heavy, high backwash rates are needed to clean the media. No chemical regeneration is required and nothing is imparted into the drinking water.
Filox consists of 75% - 85% Manganese Dioxide. The high Manganese Dioxide content makes the product more effective.
Filox can be used to treat iron in water even if the PH is Low. It works best when aerated before the Filter, this oxidises the Iron, Manganese and Hydrogen Sulphide and stops it travelling through the Media and on into the Drinking Water. With a high content of Iron or Manganese the Filox can be dosed with Potassium Permanganate to help clean and oxidise the Filox.
HEXAMETA PHOSPHATE FILTERS
These are a dosing unit allowing the Hexameta Phosphate to coat the CaCo³ (Hardness) particles in the water, this transforms them into negative ions stopping them from sticking to metal such as heating elements like those found in kettles and boilers etc. The hexameta phosphate is contained in a 10” Doser filter housing; it is an alternative to a water softener.

BIRM IRON & MANGANESE FILTER
Birm is an efficient and economical method of removing dissolved Iron and Manganese compounds from raw water supplies. Acting as a catalyst, it enhances the reaction between dissolved Oxygen and Iron compounds and is easily cleaned by back washing regularly to remove the collected Iron and Manganese.
WATER SOFTNERS
Water Softeners are used to treat hard water. They work by an ion exchange process, replacing the calcium and magnesium in the water with sodium. They may also remove a small amount of iron or manganese, but for high levels, it is not recommended.
Scale caused by hard water is more noticable when the water has been heated, such as in kettles. However it will cause problems in places less obvious such as heating elements in boilers. A scale build up of just 1.6mm will reduced efficiency of a heating element by 12%.
Water Softeners will generally require a professional installation.
Crystal Right™
There are 2 types of Crystal Right. CR100 used when the pH is between 6 and 7, this will raise the pH of the water.
CR200 for use if the pH of the water is 7 or more. Both CR100 and CR200 work by an ion exchange process, as with a water softener this requires salt (sodium Chloride) for regeneration. They also remove manganese, small amounts of iron and soften the water.
